2002 24HOTM Event Packet
We have 20 teams of varying compositions ready to attack the 24 hour continuous training objective!!!! Wow, this is exciting!!
The sequence of events for Saturday is this:
09:00-10:00, I am briefing volunteers.
10:00-11:00, Sing-in, map hand out, and gear check.
11:15-11:45, Course and Safety briefing.
12:00, START!!!
Attached are several things:
You can ensure smooth proceedings for sign-in, map hand out, gear check, and a timely start by doing several things.
- Be ready at 10:00 to sign-in and start. Think of this as one of those military movies where the alarm goes off and they just jump in there vehicles and start fighting.
- Download the release form, read and sign it. Then do not forget to bring it.
- Have your gear ready to race Friday night as if you were getting out of your vehicle and starting immediately. That way all you have to do is unload. For you newbies, I do a gear check on Wednesday night, then get the things I thought I had on Thursday and do a complete final check Thursday night.
- If you have PFDs, paddles, and third seats to go to the canoe location, have it all packaged together and labeled so you can recognize it Friday night. We will not transport other things, just the canoe stuff.
- Maps will be handed out as soon as each TEAM hands in their liability release forms, but NOT before 10:00. Then you can get your gear checked by team.
One of the things I like most about adventure racing, and the thing I think is least provided in most courses, is the need for and advantage of a course strategy in accomplishing not only 'special tasks' but in attacking the course itself.
This course will hopefully enable you to do just that. Other than the first loop and last (extra loop) you will be able to tackle the 3 'middle' loops in any order that you wish and in either direction of travel. Your confidence with navigating at night (orienteering section), your pace, your energy level, and many other things should govern how you attack this course from the very start. So expect to make an initial strategy before you start based on your teams strengths and weaknesses, and then adjust during the event based on successes or hardships along the way.
Looking forward to meeting all of you and sharing a great training event this weekend. Drive safely!!!
Remember, "Experience, is the thing you get the moment just after you needed it."
